Chill out this summer: Open play at area gyms

So far we're having a typical south Texas summer (AKA: It's hotter than Hades.). Stepping out of the house leaves me, and my children, drenched in sweat and worn out before we've even left the driveway. But just because it's too hot most days to let your preschooler burn off his or her energy outside doesn't mean your only option is to sit together, listlessly, in front of the TV all day. Chill out (and warm up, all at the same time) indoors at an open gym play session.

Many gyms around town offer these low-cost sessions where your child can run, play, jump, experiment with gymnastics equipment not found in your average backyard and make new friends. Sure, your preschooler is still bound to get hot but at least it'll be from working up a sweat during active play. Meanwhile you'll get to sit in a lovely, air conditioned gym (That is, unless you decide to jump in and participate too. Go, Mom! Go Dad!). Maybe you'll even make a new friend or two. Here are some gyms around town offering open play times for preschoolers:

Kids are a funny bunch. They are often loath to change and anything new. But still, our little ones are open to so much -- and so much more than we more ossified parents are! Think of poetry: preschoolers happily read and repeat poems with ease and ...Read more >
