what's in your dress up bin? How to choose a costume...

We are still building our dress up bin because my son is young.  So far it has old hats, his old Halloween costume from last year, and a couple snippets of fabric to "layer" with.  I was at Wal-Mart getting him a bandana for his costume and picked up a few in different colors for 99 cents to play with.  Picking through sale bins or getting the sale after a holiday can add to your dress up bin.  It is so important for your child to have a few items he or she can pretend and play with.  Imagination and creativity is essential to them becoming well-rounded kiddos.

So, you say, I already have a great dress-up bin.  My kids play dress-up everyday- what should they be for "the day!"- Halloween?  It really depends on the age.  Infants to toddlers you are still the boss.  Now is the time to dress them in whatever you have ever dreamed of having your child wear.  I am getting away with one more year of choosing my son's costume because frankly he doesn't know he has a choice.  I told him, "Guess what!?  You are going to be a farmer for Halloween, that is your costume."  He had read Dora' s Costume Party so he was ecstatic to just have a costume.  I believe next year he will be telling me what he wants to be.  I know that a lot of parents with an older toddler/young preschooler will give them a choice between a few of their favorite characters.  If you like an easy costume that you can snap up at Target, then make sure to suggest a popular costume that will be out everywhere.  If you like a good 'hunt' and want your child to win "Most Creative", then you might want to come up the unique choices.  Anyway you look at it, your child will probably have a blast.

Countdown is on!  Only 25 more days until Halloween.

Kids are a funny bunch. They are often loath to change and anything new. But still, our little ones are open to so much -- and so much more than we more ossified parents are! Think of poetry: preschoolers happily read and repeat poems with ease and ...Read more >
