My neighborhood: Alamo Heights -- Things to See and Do

Although Alamo Heights has been my neighborhood for 15 years I'll soon be bidding it a fond farewell to head for the burbs. I'll certainly miss my old haunts, many of which are perfect for having fun with my children. Here are just a few of the many reasons I'll be sad to leave the hood:

Twin Sisters, 6322 N. New Braunfels, 822-2265
Kids love Twin Sisters because of its miniature picnic table covered in crayons and paper. Parents love it because the food is fresh, natural and healthy. Be sure to drop in on Friday nights when local bands serenade the family-friendly crowds.

Broadway Pharmacy, 6100 Broadway, 824-3322
Broadway Pharmacy owner David Worsham prides himself on providing the customer service that chain stores seem to have forgotten. He doles out samples whenever possible, delivers car-side servicve when your kids are sick or sleeping, and he and his staff are always ready with a lollipop and a smile. No wonder my daughter, Delaney, often asks, Mom, when are we going to the pharmacy again We'll be driving across town to get our refills for sure.

Adelante, 21 Brees Blvd., 822-7681
Come for the tamales, stay for the funky Mexican folk art. Like Twin Sisters, Adelante focuses on healthy cooking'something that seems at odds with the idea of Mexican food. But you haven't lived until you've tried the fresh poblano soup, whole wheat tortillas and refried black beans. Kids are mesmerized by the giant, vibrantly-colored 'snake (and other wild artwork) that hangs from the ceiling and weaves its way around the place.

Sugarplum Dreams, 19 Brees Blvd.,  826-5402
An upscale baby and child boutique, Sugarplum Dreams is the store you walk into, promising yourself you'll just browse, but that you walk out of with more packages than your hands can carry. Darling layette sets, custom bedding, dainty jewelry and keepsakes are the mainstays here. But Delaney and I are always fascinated by their spectacular array of toys, many of which can't be found anywhere else around town. Bring your checkbook, because whether or not you think you will, you're going to need it.

Oh, yes! Of course. How could I forget it. Well, we won't miss it much because we'll be driving there to hit story time for sure. Miss Anastasia's worth the drive. --Colleen

Won't you miss The Red Balloon? Oh how we love their story time!!

Kids are a funny bunch. They are often loath to change and anything new. But still, our little ones are open to so much -- and so much more than we more ossified parents are! Think of poetry: preschoolers happily read and repeat poems with ease and ...Read more >
