Great spots for playdates

I've already mentioned what a great place the Joske Pavillion area of Brackenridge Park is for playdates. But where else can you and your pals (and your child's pals) hang out and have fun?

Try Kate's Frosting (in Monte Vista on 2518 N. Main - 248-9809). Not only are the cupcakes otherworldly, but they offer both a children's play area and an adult lounge overlooking it. And even if your regular playdate friends can't make it, take your child and go anyway. You're sure to meet other sugar-fiend moms with their kids. Anyone who chooses to hang out at Kate's is alright by me.

Another great place? Beto's Comida Latina (call it Beto's for short). Their food is fantastic (and cheap!), featuring the best fish tacos on the planet and their famous empanadas in addition to the usual taco/enchilada fare. The kids' meals come with carrots (No way. Nutrition in a kid's meal? WAY.). And their lovely patio includes a simple, yet beloved-by-children, playscape. Have your playdate partners meet you at Beto's where the kids can entertain themselves and the moms (and dads) can actually chat for a change.

Scenic Loop Cafe (25615 Boerne Stage Road) is a great place to listen to live music, enjoy some good food, great drinks and let the kids play in one of TWO play areas. And because you're not the only parents there, you're not going to get the stink-eye for mixing beers and binkies!

Brindles Awesome Ice Creams is the ONLY place to go after browsing the shelves at Half Price Books at the Huebner Strand Shopping Center (the corner of Huebner Road and Huebner Oaks). Located between the Half Price Books store and the Flying Saucer, Brindles is very child-friendly and Sima and Steve are always on had to share a new gelato flavor with you or the little one. Great coffee, good service and tasty cakes, too!

The Cove (606 W. Cypress, just south of SACC)! Where else can you do your laundry, wash your car, eat some pretty famous(?) fish tacos, choose from a bevy of beers and let the kids run around a newly renovated (and enlarged) play area and patio?! And take the time to enjoy the veggie Mediterranean platter - the hummus is amazing!

Kids are a funny bunch. They are often loath to change and anything new. But still, our little ones are open to so much -- and so much more than we more ossified parents are! Think of poetry: preschoolers happily read and repeat poems with ease and ...Read more >
