All About Me: Time Alone for Mom or Dad or Mom & Dad

Let's face it. It hasn't been about you since the baby was born. And the more children you have the less time you have to yourself or with your significant other. As parents we all know that we need time to ourselves to refresh and refuel. We know how important time with our spouse or significant other is for the survival our relationship. But yadda, yadda, yadda, that's just preaching to the choir. It's time we stopped over-analyzing the reasons why we need the time and just seize it. Here are some suggestions for how to enjoy those blissful few hours you get to yourself (or with your significant other) after booking the babysitter. Get out there and make the most of it!

All about Mom
Low Budget: Get a rub down for only $30 at The Academy for Massage Therapy and follow it up with a dreamy vanilla chai latte at Olmos Perk.

Middle of the Road: Get a $30 deluxe spa pedicure at Basse Nails (355 E Basse Rd., 78209, 832-9322) and catch a chick flick afterward at the nearby Alamo Quarry Theater.

High End: Head to Austin for a weekend of pampering at Lake Austin Spa.

All about Dad
Low Budget: Hang out at the Huebner Oaks Half Price Books and then read your purchases next door at The Flying Saucer while choosing from their huge beer selection (over 70 on draught and around 100 bottled varieties).

Middle of the Road: Play a round of golf at a public course.

High End: Rent a Harley for a weekend tour of the Texas Hill Country (My husband did this and loved it so much he almost didn't come home.)

All about Mom & Dad
Low Budget: A casual date for TexMex at Taco Garage (8403 Broadway, 78209, 826-4405).

Middle of the Road: Dinner at Paesano's on the River Walk followed by an evening of jazz at Jim Cullum's The Landing.

High End: Weekend away at a B&B in Fredericksburg (Settler's Crossing Bed and Breakfast and Two Wee Cottages are both great bets). Arrange for a couples' massage and lunch at The Herb Farm Day Spa.

Take advantage of the Adults Only theaters at the Santiko's Palladium. For no extra cost, watch a movie in a theater that's for 21 year olds and up - because they also happen to serve drinks! Or take advantage of the summer deal - watch a movie before 12 noon on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday and tickets are only $4. (Be sure to take advantage of the in house Starbucks(r) at that time of the day.)

Dads can wander around with their mouths agape at the Bass Pro Shop, test out some fishing tackle, sit behind the wheel of a boat (the one he'll never get) and after all that looking, get a bite to eat the the Pro Shop's in house restaurant. Or he can order a beer and just watch the fish swim in the huge tank behind the hostess stand near the bar.

I could definitely use a massage right now, and the low-cost option is quite attractive. If I can manage to get away from the family, I will be soooo there.

Kids are a funny bunch. They are often loath to change and anything new. But still, our little ones are open to so much -- and so much more than we more ossified parents are! Think of poetry: preschoolers happily read and repeat poems with ease and ...Read more >
