It is Waaaay Too Hot To Be Outdoors
July 09, 2009
First off, could it be any hotter? Watching the weather is depressing- even more so for the mother of a pre-schooler- because my first thought is, "what the heck am I going to do with my kids that is indoors?!" We will sometimes go to the pool in the morning but usually stay indoors the rest of the days. If we dare brave going out in the afternoon, we are sweating just getting in the car! With a high of 100 degrees forecasted for Saturday and the rest of this weekend, here are a few air-conditioned! places to take advantage of.

June 15, 2009
Can't we all just agree that camps are synonymous with summer? I desperately wanted to go to camp as a kid- any kind- but usually money was tight. I am anxious that I can already send my son to camp! As kids get older they can help decide what their interests are and what camps they want to try. If you have a theatre actor, a chef, an artist or dancer there are plenty of camps to choose from. One thing is for sure, it is definitely not to late to sign up for camp- even if we already well into summer. Most places still have weeks available- some even in June!

Earth Day Crafts
April 14, 2009
Earth day is a week away. It feels like every year Earth day seems a little more important and gains a more popularity. I remember a mention of Earth Day when I went to school, but not near the attention it gets today. I enjoy teaching my son to take care of our "Earth". In honor of Earth Day next week I wrangled together a few crafts to do with the kids with that theme. They are items you probably have around the house and are definitely on the 'easy' level.

April 13, 2009
I'd like to think I found us (my kids and I) a new hangout! Paint, Paper, Scissors is located on 13133 NW Military Hwy, Ste. #100 (between Wurzback Pkwy and George Road in the Oak Place Center). The small shop packs in a lot of fun. We discovered it through our playgroup when someone suggested going to Art Exploration. Art Exploration is Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10-12 and Wednesday afternoons 3:30-5:30. Each child is $5 and must be accompanied by an adult. When I first heard we were going to Art Exploration and found out it wouldn't be a class or have any instruction, I balked. I pictured a pile of construction paper, a box of dried up markers and a sticky glue stick thrown on a table for the children to make 'art'. Not the case! Read more...
Don't Forget about Your Local Barnes and Noble!
March 26, 2009
I am not sure we fully appreciate all our local Barnes and Noble has to offer. I know their events had slipped my mind until my son and daughter happened in there one rainy day during Spring Break to get out of the drizzle. We found ourselves sitting in their little children's reading area and completely lost track of time. I then saw events they had coming up and wondered why I wasn't in here more often. The events I have listed below are for Barnes and Noble at Northwoods (281 and 1604), but the link I have will allow you to plug in any area of town to check when the exact times are at your Barnes and Noble.

Have you discovered the new website, Moms Around SA? It is from the people that brought you My Mommy Connection. They felt that this new website would help all Moms of kids of all ages, whereas the former My Mommy Connection only helped Moms of little kids. If you are looking for things to do, this is another great resource. Under the Kidtivities tab, there are many places to try out. Even if you have heard of some of them, they sometimes offer tips or specials you didn't know about. I have also listed the information from last week about classes or camps for Spring Break. If you want to avoid the whole, "I'm bored" routine, sign them up for a camp (call about these camps, most of them still have available space). We have an early Spring Break this year- it is in two weeks (March 9-13)! If you were thinking about enrolling your kiddo in a fun class or camp, now is the time to do it before everything fills up.

Scrapbooking is a way to express yourself creatively. It can also be considered therapeutic and a way to let the stresses dissipate. It allows you to journal about memories through stories and photos. If these are all the reasons an adult scrapbooks, it would most definitely be the same for a child. A preschooler is the perfect age to introduce scrapbooking to. They LOVE art, telling stories, Read more...

"Active" or consumable gifts
December 16, 2008
Sometimes I will be playing with my kids or cleaning up their toys and will get overwhelmed at all of the 'stuff' they have! We don't have a huge house, and if we don't make my son put up one toy before taking out another, we can begin to get claustrophobic. Or, if I am organizing and cleaning their toys, I realize how many they just don't use! That is why my husband and I appreciate when loved Read more...
Handmade gifts of pottery

Ok, I know you are not done with your shopping yet. You might be stuck on a particular person that is really hard to buy for. Turn the pressure over to the kids! Take them to one of these great art studios to make a Christmas gift for a loved one. Your child will love creating a gift and the receiver will have a much more meaningful gift than a gift card. I have wrote about The Painted Plate Read more...
Upcoming Events at the Children's Museum
December 01, 2008
Did you know the San Antonio Children's Museum has a new permanent exhibit? It is like a mini-HEB that your kids can pretend they are shopping in, and even working at! Children can use kid-sized grocery carts to shop for "real" food. They will feel just like Mom and Dad when they can weigh their produce, pick out turkey or chicken, and pick out new types of food to try. When they get to the Read more...

I just had to share my Sesame Street Live experience with you! Have you taken your child to see Old MacDonald's Farm at the Steven Stoli Playhouse ? If you haven't, tomorrow is the last day it is showing. Make sure to put the next play on your calendar- Little Red Riding Hood and the Cookie Wolf showing Oct. 4- Nov. 1. Tickets are cheaper than going to a movie and probably a better experience. Grandparents Day is Sunday
September 05, 2008
Who is oftentimes the next best thing to Mommy or Daddy? Grandma/Grandpa of course! We have a joke in our family about who my son would pick to comfort him, say after a fall, and we all agree it depends who is in the room. We all agree that if my Mom is in the room, she trumps everyone; and he would run straight to Grandma, past Mommy for sure. I know what a special relationship I had with Read more...
Seaside Crafts
August 20, 2008
I come from a creative and crafty family. Unfortunately for me, I did not inherit the gene. Instead, I spend many hours trying to teach myself by way of the internet or just pretending (in front of an especially artistic relative) that of course I know how to decoupage. So, with all this said, I found leftover seashells from our beach trip stuffed in my son's backpack the other day. He was Read more...
Introducing Your Preschooler to the World of Modern Art: The Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum

Once you've made your foray into the world of art with your preschooler , it's time to vary your art-viewing experience a bit to keep them interested. San Antonio is fortunate to be home to the first modern art museum in Texas. Visiting the San Antonio Museum of Art Honesty time. It never occurred to me before to take my daughter to the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) . Sure, I thought I'd take her one day, eventually, when she's 12 or 13. In my fantasy we'd make a day of it, starting with the museum and ending with spirited discussions about the art we'd enjoyed over tea and cakes at Madhatter's. But, until Read more...

How to Cultivate the Tiniest Green Thumb
May 21, 2008
Little Sprout Mondays at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens I find it difficult to interest my three-year-old daughter in anything involving dirt. It's probably because I've lectured her one too many times on the many benefits of hand washing. She's now a bit of a clean freak (Good going, germaphobe mom!) who can't stand to have dirty hands. Thank goodness the San Antonio Botanical Garden hosts Read more...
