Great Harvest Bread Company

July 20, 2009

We are in a playgroup with Moms that come up with fabulous ideas of things for our kiddos to do.  One of the moms found out that Great Harvest Bread Company gives tours on Wednesdays for small groups.  They have two locations (20079 Stone Oak Parkway and 2267 NW Military Hwy) and we had our tour at the Stone Oak location.  You have to talk to the manage to set it up and it might take awhile.  We had to wait a few weeks because we weren't the only ones with this great idea!  The tour was great and age appropriate for preschoolers.  The manager used a story to get the children engaged.  She would use the story when explaining different aspects of the bread making process.  The kids loved touching the flour, peering inside the huge oven, and checking out the monster size mixers.  We left with a bag of goodies and a loaf of bread.  It definitely helps that their food is delicious!  It is worth checking out.  Does anyone know other shops or venues that offer tours for little ones?  Read more...

Top Places to get a Cold Treat

June 09, 2009

I don't think one can write enough posts on ice cream/gelato!  If you haven't noticed yet, I am not real fond of the humidity and tick off the days until fall again.  I really think I would enjoy summer as a season if it wasn't so blazing hot here in San Antonio.  My husband knows how to keep me happy during summer excursions, you must keep me cool.  We treat ourselves regularly to a cold treat (milkshakes, frozen yogurt, ice cream, or gelatos).  Here are a few favorites- and a couple new spots!

Best Cupcakes Around Town

April 28, 2009

Anyone that knows me, knows I have an incurable sweet tooth (teeth?!) that has to be catered to on a regular basis.  My son is my husband's carbon copy, has a lot of his characteristics, but definitely inherited his Mom's sweet tooth.  Poor kid.  I was only slightly disappointed, because it meant that I would now have a partner that would likely indulge me in my adventures to find the ultimate sweet.  He has already helped me in the quest to find the best cupcakes in San Antonio.  Cupcakes are popular and cupcake shops are popping up more and more.  I haven't tried all of these- (business owners can send samples for a full review!) but you will be able to tell the ones I have!  Let me know of any others I may have missed.

An Interview with Emme

February 23, 2009

Eating disorders is not something we typically associate with our preschoolers, but we should be aware of it.  Eventually our preschoolers will be pre-teenagers (GASP!) and no matter their size they need to have healthy attitudes towards themselves and others.  I was lucky enough to be in on a conference call with supermodel, Emme.  She is a nationally recognized body image and self esteem advocate.   Emme has twice been selected as People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful Women.

Emme is working with Yale University's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity to educate our country about weight bias, weight discrimination and wants to share with you helpful ways to teach your children about the harmful effects of weight bias and how to support a child in your life who is the victim of such a horrible experience.

I am bringing you this interview as the week of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week begins.  Please take a moment after reading this post to visit the site!
